Globalization by Imani - August 2015 Scholarship Essay

High school is the end of the road for formal education for many students within the United States. Once a student graduates, they officially become adults, working adults, accountable for their own actions. They are used to teachers telling them about the “real world” and now they are experiencing it for themselves. Although school officials speak about the overwhelming and terrifying place called the “real world”, their students are not being efficiently taught about real world applications. The American curriculum should act more in the favor of a student’s overall success than of basic skills that will become voided after graduation. The world is constantly evolving and students should learn more about its changes from classes other than history. One subject that would assess the “real world” would be globalization. Courses about globalization would fill in the required information for functioning as a proper adult in a changing society.

The world is full to the brim with various beliefs, cultures and values. Globalization is the international integration and interchange of cultures and students should learn more about this in depth. With the advancement of technology, such as the internet, globalization is on the rise. Students should be familiar with this principle as they would learn other cultural values and become educated about the world. Students would not be as benighted of events and issues plaguing the United States and other nations. Teens should know about alien cultures and become informed on international issues. No one in this country should be ignorant because a young adult should know about their planet. Classes on globalization would make students more informed, more capable to hold educated opinions and more rounded as a person; qualities that each adult should hold.

As the vast majority of people within the United States knows, the internet in a powerful tool. People can learn authentic Japanese food dishes, read articles on the Greek debt crisis or talk to people in Sweden and they can do this with simple clicks and a few words; this is the effect on the internet. Most students have access to the internet daily and comprehends how it functions on a surface level, but the internet is one of the best examples of modern day globalization. A student should know how essential the exchange of civilization works in order to function properly within the current times. Students use a connection to globalization daily and they should more information on the culture they are looking at only a screen away. Understanding the connection is only one step, as students must also be connected and learn about those they are being connected to. American youths are no longer limited to only national culture due to globalization, but simultaneously, the adolescence of America are not learning enough and thus, they should be formally educated.

The “real world” for high school students is less than four years away and while teachers always speak about said place, students are not being informed. A class on globalization would help prepare students on the “real world” because they must be informed on worldly matters. History classes speak of the world’s past not its present and students need to know this to function within a society that is a hotbed of cultures.
