Leadership Skills Really Are Necessary for College Success by Ian Javier - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

It is necessary to be a leader in today's world when attending college. Being a leader lets people know that you are smart, capable, and in control of what's
going on around you. It impresses people to know that you are very knowledgeable about the topic matter at hand, whether it be math, science, foreign languages, English, or other subject matter. Being a leader allows people to follow YOUR example, rather than you "blindly following "their" example. To be a leader is to have self-confidence in whatever you're doing. I believe that in this world there are two groups: leaders and followers. A leader takes charge, gets involved, helps, attends, participates, and carries through on things. A follower just does what the leader tells him to do. Thus, a follower is more or less "mimicking" and not really getting involved. This is why I have strived to be a leader amongst my friends in high school. In my art class, my teacher says that I am the first to volunteer and demonstrate what to do to the other students. I am also a leader at home, because my parents never have to remind me to do my homework (I am motivated on my own). They also never have to tell me when to get ready for work - I know my schedule, and I am always "on time", very reliable, and do what I am told.

I hope to become a plastic surgeon. I have been admitted to Purdue University, in West Lafayette, Indiana. I need scholarship money to help me pay for my books and supplies. I hope you will consider me for a scholarship. Thank you for your time.
