My Ideal Classroom and How It Would Effect My Learning by Holland - July 2020 Scholarship Essay
When it comes to being in a learning environment, I have never given much thought to how different classroom settings have affected my way of obtaining knowledge. It is evident now that my surroundings while being in a classroom can affect the way I learn. Different surroundings can also alter how I feel in a classroom.
When thinking of the perfect learning environment for me, the first idea that comes to my mind is simplicity. There are a variety of different ways that people prefer to do their learning, and I personally prefer something more uncomplicated. I tend to get distracted quite easily, so having a simple classroom would help to keep my focus on schooling. My simple classroom would consist of mostly essentials such as desks and chairs and a board for the instructor’s teachings.
I have noticed that I enjoy classrooms on the smaller side rather than large auditorium classrooms. The less occupied classes make it easier to know the instructor as well as other classmates, which results in being more comfortable around each other as well as making it easier to ask questions and have discussions. I also believe that having a smaller class occupancy can help by enabling the instructor to teach at a reasonable pace that benefits the class as a whole. It is also crucial to me that my ideal classroom is a classroom that is completely judge-free. I would want to be able to feel safe to share different opinions or ask different questions without feeling like I couldn’t be myself. It is important to be able to express yourself while learning in a classroom to be able to be the most satisfied.
A small, simple, judge-free classroom would benefit my learning by simply not getting in the way of me learning. I believe an optimal learning environment is somewhere that a student feels comfortable and somewhere where a student can enjoy themselves while learning. Learning should not be considered a hassle but instead be an opportunity. It is also important that a student goes in feeling ready to learn, but also that the student leaves that classroom feeling pleased with themselves.
