What Aspect of my Education am I Most Thankful for? by Hogan - November 2020 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my years in high school I have learned and acquired many skills that have turned me into the man and student I am today. I could say the aspect I’m most thankful for is subjective thinking, or note taking, but that would be disingenuous. The aspect of my education that I am most thankful for is my relationship building skills.
I believe that at the nature of all interactions and entities could be exemplified through a relationship. Success is often dependent on relationships. If I want to be a great football player, how am I to succeed without a good relationship with my teammates and coaches?
My education has exercised my relationship skills. I’ve witnessed first hand the difference in my grade when I have a great relationship with a teacher, versus a bad relationship with a teacher. I’ve learned how important it is to be respectful of my teachers and fellow students. Respect is paramount when it comes to relationships. Cooperation can never exist if there is not mutual respect.
During my time as a student I’ve built countless relationships, and I am a reflection of those relationships and how they have affected me. I am thankful that I can be placed in a group with students that I don’t know and with by treating them with friendliness and respect we can form a functioning and enjoyable group of people.
I believe that the ability to work with others and coexist with other people is more important than any type of pseudo-knowledge. Ultimately, if I cannot be a functioning member of society, then what good is an extensive knowledge in botany? In many ways relationships that I have built with others during my time as a student has helped my knowledge and increased the proficiency that I would have otherwise demonstrated as a student.
I am thankful for what I have learned as a student; but I am most thankful and indebted to the relationships that I have formed with people the past four years. I am looking forward to the next four and building relationships with new people from entirely different backgrounds. In the end the relationships I build will make me a more respectful, knowledgeable, and competent member of society.
