Who wants to Learn how to have Fun? by Heather - January 2015 Scholarship Essay
I admire teachers. They work hard, endure major stress, and get paid a low salary considering the amount of problems they must patiently deal with. However, sometimes the environment in which they must teach affects the outcome of their daily class lessons or lectures. Sometimes, just like other humans, teachers need advice. In order for the teacher to better help me personally learn, I would tell the teacher to teach in a creative matter. I would also tell the teacher to be friendly yet stern with their class teaching time. I would also tell the teacher to teach at a reasonable rate of speed so that the students get the maximum benefits of each class lesson.
I strongly believe that creativity in the classroom helps many different types of students learn in a productive matter. When the teacher makes the class fun and exciting, the student is more likely to focus and get involved with the class. It is easier for a person to enjoy and remember the things they have been taught if they are enjoying the moment in which they hear or see the information. There are simple tricks to make class time fun. One simple trick is to engage in a trivia game involving information learned in the class over the week. The teacher could set a specific day such as Friday and conduct a trivia game and the winner could be given 10 extra credit points on the next test. The trivia game idea is just one of many possibilities in creating a fun and creative learning environment.
Teachers often get interrupted in their class time. It may be a personal phone call, an interruptive student, or maybe even a fire drill. Those interruptions take away from valuable class time. This hinders both the teacher and the students. In order to create the best outcomes for grades and class experience, the teacher needs to be sure to be prepared for different types of interruptions. The teacher should continue to be creative in teaching to ensure a fun class environment. However, the teacher should also speak with the class about the importance of class time. The teacher should explain to the students that harms that comes with interruptions during class time, and help them think of ways to lessen the amount of interruptions throughout class times. One step the students and teachers could take to avoid interruptions is to ensure that the class works as a team to stay focused and eliminate as much student caused interruption as possible. This would require each student to agree in working in a time saving effective matter as possible. By saving time on student interruptions, then the teacher is allowed to expand the creativeness of her lectures thus proposing for a much better learning outcome.
Teachers should also teach at a reasonable rate of speed. Have you ever taken a class and three days into the class, you are already lost and overwhelmed with large amounts of information? This happens in some cases. Some teachers go over so much information in one class that it begins to add up quickly. Once so much information has been collected in such a small amount of time, it becomes overwhelming. It is dangerous to overwhelm the students because this can lead to the student’s frustration and anxiety, thus causing a decline in grades. It is extremely important that teachers have an understanding of a reasonable rate of speed in which to teach the entire class. Some students learn faster than others and some students learn slower than others. In order to compensate for each student’s needs, the teacher should plan class lessons ahead of time. This allows for the best planned out, useable, reasonable rate of speed learning environment possible. The teacher could also take longer on harder lessons and shorter on easier lessons. The best way to determine a decent rate of speed in teaching lessons in the classroom is to stay informed about each student’s needs. The teacher then can make the correct calculations and then develop lessons that are extremely productive for each student.
Although teachers are brilliant people among the earth, they still are allowed helpful advice just like the rest of us. In order for teachers to enhance what people learn in the classroom, they should have a creative and fun learning environment; they should eliminate as many class interruptions as possible; and they should teach at a reasonable rate of speed. In doing all of those things, the teacher has a more likely chance in teaching me, and many other students from around the world in a more productive and conclusive matter. After all, who wants to learn how to be dumb?
