Follow the Leader by Hayley - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

No one wants the title of being a follower, and that is exactly what you are if you are not a leader. Leadership skills are an absolute necessity for college success and every other aspect of life. Everyone has at some point in their life been asked, “If your friend jumps off a bridge, does that in turn mean that you will jump off the bridge too?”, everyone would like to answer with a certain “no”, but when you think about it you start considering circumstances like height of the bridge, depth of the water, animals that may be swimming below; then you push the limits of what it means to be a follower. The harsh reality of college is that in order to be successful; you have to be a leader. You have to find yourself and figure out what in the world you want to do with the rest of your life. This is absolutely terrifying for the majority of upcoming college students including myself.

Leaders are some of the most powerful and respected people in the world. They have a vision of what they want in life which allows them to express their view more clearly than anyone else. A misleading concept is that leaders are born, but anyone can develop good leadership skills through growing and having a sense of trust in oneself. If you can lead yourself, you can lead anyone.

It is our time to decide, not our parents and not our friends, but ours. Our leadership skills will carry us through college and the rest of our life.
