Success: Post-High School by Harrison - February 2021 Scholarship Essay

Success can be defined in a plethora of different ways. Most people would define success as accomplishing your goal. In the case of college or grad school, that would be graduating with a degree in your pursued field. While I agree with this statement, I also believe that there is more to it then just graduation. I think that there are several aspects such as: gaining connections, becoming an adult, and finding your purpose in life, that are apart of a successful college or grad school experience.

One way that I would define success in seeking further education, would be all of the connections you can get out of it. I believe that you go to college not just for a piece of paper, but also meeting all kinds of different people that can help you in life. You never know in life when you will find yourself out of a job, or just not able to get a job. These connections that you can develop can help you find one. Not to mention all of the bonds and friendships you can get out of this experience. You just might find your best friend for life, or even your soulmate.

Secondly, another way I'd define success in college or grad school, would be getting used to your new life as an adult. For most of us, our whole lives we've lived with our parents, and they were there every step of the way. They would make sure you had food, clothes, and everything else that parents do. Now, you are pretty much on your own, and you are the one responsible for taking care of yourself. You have to do for yourself what your parents did for you and much much more.

My final way that you could define success in college/grad school is finding your purpose in life. A lot of high school graduates aren't sure what they want to do once they are out of high school. For what ever reason, they just haven't found their calling in life. In college and grad schools you can explore many different classes that you never even thought you could be interested in. You also might discover once, your in college that you don't like what you chose as your major and don't want to pursue the career that comes with it. You don't want to get stuck with a career that you aren't happy with, you want what everything wants, success.

What is a successful college or grad school experience? Well, I believe that creating connections, becoming an adult, and discovering your purpose in life all define different aspects of success in college or grad school. All of these points work together to set you up for success, even beyond your college/ grad school life. Success isn't easy to get, but its worth every ounce of effort it takes to reach it.
