Leading yourself by Hannah - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

It takes a lot to do well in college; dedication, time, endurance, positivity, and determination. But for some, leadership skills can really help with success. Those who are good at leading others, are also good at pushing themselves forward, leading themselves. Although not everyone that does graduate from college are perfect leaders for others, but are for themselves.

To a degree I was one of those students. I disliked group activities. It seemed every group activity I participated in, not everyone put in the same effort. When I had to lead the group it was just hard, I realized I didn’t enjoy telling others what to do, it’s just my nature. Or I lacked the confidence to speak my opinions to everyone if they were quiet. I don’t enjoy being harsh or bossy towards others. I once had a manager position at my last job, and I found it very difficult actually. Some of my coworkers were disrespectful because I was younger than them. They felt like I was too young to tell them what to do, it was a hard time. I just wanted to do a good job and people learn by observing my work ethic. I want people to just live by example. That is how I am a leader, I try my hardest, and I work hard. I practice honesty, and hard work, but I am the kind of person to work behind the scenes away from the spotlight. I enjoy doing good deeds without any need for recognition. So far I’ve done okay in school, but I do think if I had better leadership skills, I would do even better in college.

My father though on the other hand was an eagle scout, and he did excellent in high school and college. He has a great job as an engineer. He is creative, hard working and does many presentations, and does well with leading conferences, always keeps the topic on point but captivating. He mentioned that some of his coworkers were once boy scouts like he was. He noted that those who were eagle scouts were the coworkers who were very innovative and smart hard workers who succeeded often in the work place. That’s when I realized leadership skills that you present really shows that you have what is important to succeed! When you learn such skills early on, you carry them with you to college, and studying and doing well in tests becomes easier than it is for others.

Therefore, although it is very helpful to have leadership skills, the best kind of leading you need is being able to lead you through the right path, finding the right career for you and pushing yourself. If you can’t lead others, you need to at least have the leadership skills to push yourself, that’s what matters.
