An Ideal Educational System by Hannah - May 2020 Scholarship Essay
Education has changed so much over the years and will continue to change with every generation to come. I personally do not know what it will look like in 50 years, but I know what I hope it will look like. While most kids are able to go to school from a young age, schools aren’t always as effective as they could be. I have home-schooled since the fifth grade, so my view of education is very different than most people’s experience. However, homeschooling has allowed me to see the faults in our education system and see other ways of learning that seem to work better for most students. Every person is different, and conforming all of us to one way of learning simply isn’t the most effective method of education.
Some people prefer to learn in classrooms with a teacher helping them stay on task. Other people prefer to learn on their own, able to ask for help when they need it but working at their own pace. I am one of those individuals who is able to keep myself on task and prefers to work at my own pace, making homeschooling and taking classes online perfect for me. I know several of my friends would love to be able to work this way, rather than learn the same way as everyone else at their schools. Other friends of mine cannot imagine learning the way I do because they have trouble staying focused without being in a classroom with reminders of the work they need to do. An ideal education system 50 years from now, or even sooner, would be one that allows the kids to learn in the way the fits them best. Some people may prefer sitting in quiet and working at their own pace, while others would prefer background noise to help them focus. Each individual learns differently, and it would be amazing if our schools used those differences to their advantage, giving the students the chance to figure out how they learn best and then using those methods to teach that particular student. I realize this may be a little hard to implement, but who knows what technology we’ll have 50 years from now? Maybe someone will invent something that helps educate everyone the way that fits them best and sets them up for success in the future.
Another ideal situation for education in the future would be reduced costs on college education. College degrees are becoming more important in finding a good job, but due to the high cost of most universities, fewer and fewer people are able to actually earn their degree and even fewer are debt-free after college. If cost were reduced, more people could continue their education, potentially changing the world with their new ideas that they were able to put into practice thanks to the higher education they received. Everyone should have the chance to further their education, but right now that just isn’t possible. Perhaps in 50 years we will be able to offer a college education to everyone at little to no cost, setting up those individuals for a better chance at success and giving them more chances to change the world.
Both a personalized education experience and reduced college costs would greatly impact the students of the future. We may not have these right now, but if we keep learning and doing what we can to improve our educational systems now, maybe these ideal circumstances could be a reality for students 50 years from now. Let’s work together to provide future generations with the best education possible so they can change the world for the better.
