Ugly Cupcakes by Hailey - February 2017 Scholarship Essay
One of my favorite hobbies is baking, and I am not the type of person who uses recipes - I tend to just eyeball things instead. My grandmother was the same way, and she is the one I spent many days in the kitchen with growing up so I come by it honestly, I guess. This usually works out well for me, as a majority of things that I make turn out delicious. However, there have been a few instances where the baked good turns out completely atrocious. In these rare situations, it really disappoints me because of course I want my food to turn out really well.
The aforementioned situations of baked good abominations are the ones that teach me lessons though. Yeah, it isn't life or death to make a bad cupcake, but it is a lesson that can be transferred to other situations. If you really want to make a good cupcake, you just have to keep trying and tweaking the recipe tidbits at a time and you will end up with an amazing cupcake. The same thing goes for all aspects of life, as perseverance is key to success.
Growing up in the kitchen with my grandma not only taught me how to make delicious cakes and cookies, but it also taught me to never give up. If something doesn't turn out the way you want it to, just make some changes until it does turn out the way you want it. It's very important to never give up on something, even if you fail or mess up the first time.
