Reaching out through the pages by Gregory - May 2017 Scholarship Essay
The book series I Am Number Four was just the first book that has affected my life in multiple ways. It showed me in multiple ways and perspectives the lives and struggles people in the world face. From John(number four) to number six. The author of the books went into much detail that I've never seen in any other book I have read in my life. The struggles of being forced to live on the run since birth basically, changing their identities. It's given me a new look on how people survive. it shows us how we are different but also how we are the same.
In the first book we are introduced to the main character John, who is number four, we get a brief backstory on how it came to this. We are told that when he was very young his planet was invaded and he and 8 others escaped with their guardians. At that point I realized that John was basically raised by this guardian who we learn is named Henri. This gave me a perspective, about how he was forced to leave his family, and his home to go with a new person he considers family. It affected me by giving me a sense to be grateful for what I have.
Of course with all the running they do John and I assume the others (I say assume because we don't know how they adapted to living on Earth) they never stay in the same place for long because of the fear of being found by the enemy. Right away I started thinking of how some people in the world are on the run or are afraid to come home because of something that had happened to them I believe that the author wrote it to be interpreted that way. It got me thinking about the struggle that some people go through to simply feel safe.
These are just a few ways that this book series has affected me. The ways that the book has reached out to me through the pages told me and gave examples throughout the book on how people live while on the run, and how children who are taken from there family and home and put into a new one act when they are raised. That is what I believe affected me the most. it gave me perspective on these ideas and issues, It's given me examples in the simplest way it could, by giving me a 1st person perspective through the eyes of the main character himself.
