Are leadership skills necessary for college success? Why or why not? by Greenbrier - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my high school career, I have been fortunate enough to have attended schools that offer clubs and extracurricular programs that give students the opportunity to actively engage in leadership roles. I believe that the attributes that are taken from these clubs and organizations are necessary to succeed in college.

Throughout your college career, it would be beneficial to have these acquired leadership skills for many various reasons. Through having attained these leadership qualities, you will be able to gain respect from both your educators and your peers. Those around you will look to you when they are in need of advice and guidance, which will help you gain confidence to voice your opinions and thoughts on controversial topics.

According to the philosopher Martin Luther, “For truth and duty it is ever the fitting time; who waits until circumstances completely favor his undertaking, will never accomplish anything.” Which essentially states that if you only wait until everything is perfect to step up to be the person you want to be, nothing will ever happen. In order to make a difference in society, it is necessary to be able to communicate your thoughts clearly and intelligently, which is nearly impossible to do without having a good background in being a leader.
