The Positive Impact of Technology in the Classroom by Grace - January 2020 Scholarship Essay
In my experience, technology being available in my classrooms has been invaluable. My school is very small, having just fifty-three students in the entire high school, means our community can be very small. Our teachers are able to access various online resources to ensure that we are getting the same, quality education that a student at a larger school might get. We are able to take classes online in order to receive college credit and take classes that might not otherwise be offered because we have access to computers.
Country Christian is a wonderful school, full of close friends, teachers who know and support each student, and sometimes it lacks variety in people, classes, and experiences. Each of our classrooms has chrome books available to every single student. This access to computers and the internet certainly opens up our world. It allows us to research papers, find ideas and concepts, and be learning in a technological manner. We might lack numbers in the case of students, but our students are constantly exposed to technology.
Our teachers use technology in almost all of our classes, be it Google Classroom for daily assignments, or projectors and whiteboards to present slide shows with their lectures. They access different learning tools and sites, that they in turn share with us. Many of my instructors use the internet to share ideas and garner material from other educators on shared sites like Teachers Pay Teachers. Each and every one of my teachers uses technology to ensure we are getting the newest and most accurate information, and they use technology to ensure we are prepared to enter college or the workforce.
Many of our upperclassmen; juniors and seniors, myself included; use technology to take college credit classes online. Some use the classroom chrome books to take third and fourth-year foreign languages since our school is not able to offer those advanced courses. We are encouraged in our study halls and break times to use chrome books and school internet to apply for colleges, scholarships, and trade schools. I have taken advantage of the use of technology to take online college classes at both our local community college and at another university. Because our school is so small and in an effort to be competitive with much larger high schools, the ability to earn college credit through online education has been extremely important for me. It allows me to enter college with nearly twenty college credits, cutting back on my time at my chosen university and hopefully my overall costs.
I am so thankful that my school chooses to immerse us in technology. That is a conscientious decision that students should have access to and use often the internet, computers, and even cameras, graphic calculators and other tools that allow us to be current. I feel well prepared to enter a university with other students, and eventually the workforce because I have a good understanding of how to appropriately use technology.
