Becoming Latinos In Action President by Gladys - February 2017 Scholarship Essay

The year of 2016 I was ready to commit myself to being the Latinos in Action President and be prepared to make our organization even better. I worked hard to earn that position, did much more community service and worked harder to get a 4.0 GPA every quarter. As May 13 finally started to come up I finally got the letter to see if I got the position I worked so hard for, I opened the letter with excitement and slowly started reading and fell into disappointment only to see that I did not get the position I worked hard for but also dreamt of. Having this disappointment and feeling of failure only lasted a few days, why, because I noticed that I did not need to become LIA President to achieve everything I wanted. I still can help everyone around my community and also I can still help improve our organization no matter if I have a position of a leader.
The way I was able to take this lesson of disappointment and failure was that when I want to commit myself again to another position of authority or any organization is to first see what myself can offer to the organization and how the organization can improve as a whole and not how I can improve it by myself. That is the idea of an organization is working as a team and not by yourself because the way I saw things before is that me being President of club or organization I by myself had to make the improvements or show everyone that I can do everything by self and not show that I need help in any shape or form. Having this lesson taught to me has made me grown as a person to see that I by myself can not accomplish everything in the world, but having people on your side helping you at all time and having a team can make all those accomplishments possible no matter how impossible they may seem.
By having this lesson taught has made me improve myself and has made me see that if you ask for help does not make you look weak. For a long time, I have that mentality that asking for help made me look weaker as if I did not know what I was doing. By not getting the position I wanted showed me that just because if I became president I can not do everything by self because of the mentality I used to have, being president is to show that all the improvements that are being made is being done by a team and not just you by yourself. Now at the place where I am now I feel much better at asking for help and especially now that I need help with applying for colleges and universities because I am the first generation, I do not feel weak when I ask, now I feel that I can accomplish much more in the world and become someone because as everything in the world you need a team by your side who is always supporting you in your decisions and in your wishes.
Having to fail in our lives once or twice does not mean you can not accomplish anything it is to help you improve yourself as a person helping see that sometimes the way you think is hurting you, the same it was hurting me to think that if I ask for help it made me weak but in reality it showed me it made my mentality stronger. Next time I want to apply for a leadership position I will know that it is a team effort and not just an effort of one person. Latinos In Action taught me that we are a family for a reason to help everyone and be there to support everyone and having this lesson in my life as taught me many things as well to imporve myself as an individual.
