College? Pfft! by Gianni - April 2020 Scholarship Essay
Attending a college or university is one of those things that tend to be seen as a social normality. It is just one of those things that people expect you to do if you make it out of high school. It is important for those who go into a profession that requires a degree, but anyone can receive basic life skills without it. Besides, for some, attending college is not at the top of their priority list. For example, people are living with dependent children, or in a space of poverty that is significantly difficult to escape from.
If someone like myself, a person from a low-income household, decided that they wanted to attend a college or university, they would have to consider several things. They would have to consider the cost, if they wanted to reside on campus grounds or commute daily, their meal plan, if they would be able to receive all of the supplies that they needed, how much financial aid was the school willing to offer if they were able to offer any at all, and more. Personal expenses and randomized university fees would play a large role in the factors that decided if they were able to attend a university or not. Personal expenses could include toiletries, books and supplies, clothing, medications, etcetera.
On the other hand, there are positive lights to enrolling in a college or university. People can form networks and connections, both personal and professional, take part in exhilarating activities and clubs, maybe even join a sport. In university, one can try things that they never could before. Doors of opportunity that were once closed, would then be open for the taking.
Concerning myself, attending university would allow me to reach my ultimate career goals, which are to start my own business, be at the top, and be able to give back to the community that I grew up in. I want to be the one to give orders in a work environment but still host a cohesive workspace for my employees. Without college, and in no way am I stating that businesses cannot be successful without the owner possessing a college degree, I would not be able to achieve the goals that I have set in place for myself as a prospective business owner. So to answer, "Is attending college important?" Yes, attending a college or university can be important. However, that importance depends on a person's circumstances in life. Everyone does not have access to this opportunity, so for the ones that do, they are sure to make an impact.
