Leadership Skills: An Ingredient to College Success by Gabriella - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

People enter into, graduate, or even drop out of college. It is a landmark in one’s life because it aids in his success towards a more exemplar future. However, one cannot simply attend college and learn the material; one must apply it in life. By doing so, leadership skills are necessary to successfully pass through college because they aid in the growth of a person’s character and personality, strengthen one’s goals, and in relationships with others.

When entering college, depending on the person, there can be expectations that are either shattered or strengthened in the college experience. People have said that a person will not be the same leaving college as when he first entered. Whether or not the student is successful in the process depends on if he has leadership skills. Leadership skills build a person’s character and personality. Some qualities that are necessary in being a leader are: integrity, respect, connectedness, unity, and love, to name a few. By being put in leadership roles throughout college, one can become more knowledgeable of how one must profitably go through life. Each person is a leader, not decided by if they are more outgoing than another, but by his morals and personality to strengthen himself. The skills of being a strong leader are important for college because it builds a foundation to prepare himself before entering into the “real world.”

Everyone has goals; some may be more prominent and obvious than others, but they are still there. As people have goals preceding college, they must first get through college. In order to successfully graduate from college, one must have leadership skills to strengthen the goals set before him to be more motivated for future tasks. In leadership roles, the community sets forth goals to accomplish for a purpose. During the process of working towards accomplishing the goals, the leader learns how to respond to the mishaps that can interfere with the progress towards the set goals. Also, he learns how to work with varied types of people and learns how to work through conflict, challenges, and hardship. Those types of experiences are crucial because there will also be conflict, challenges, and hardship during one’s college career. The practice of leadership can help strengthen the goals of the person because it can build motivation and remind him about the feeling of triumph at the end when all is completed well. The leadership skills can rollover into the work life, the marriage life, and help strengthen the newer goals in everyday life.

One might not think leadership skills are necessary in relationships. In college, it is inevitable that there will be connections between people. Relationships are important in college because those friendships established can last for a lifetime, and even provide a spouse in the process. Having experience in any form of leadership provides experience with people, being familiar with building trust, unity, respect for one another, honesty, connectedness, and the list goes on. In relationships, one cannot go the college path alone. By building relationships, it would be deemed successful to graduate with a strong group of friends to have each other down the road for many years ahead. In order to have this accomplishment, the experience of leadership is necessary because one can apply his gained knowledge from the leadership involvement and use those qualities to strengthen the relationships that are present. Without leadership skills, relationships can become unbalanced, complicated, and will not aid in college success.

People do not plan on failing college. However, it is critical that a person has leadership experience during his college experience in order to enhance his personality and character, bolster his goals, and to build up his relationships with others. By being involved in leadership roles and obtaining the skills from those roles, those found skills can aid in the prosperity to completing college strongly and to move on in life. Leadership skills do not just aid in college success but as well as life in general because those skills procured can be applied to all aspects of life.
