Bringing Change Into my Intended Career Field by Fontana - June 2020 Scholarship Essay

My intended career is to be a physical education teacher in a high school setting. There are plenty of ways I plan to bring change into my career. One of the main reasons I want to go into this career is to spark change.

The field I am going into is predominately male. So, even growing up as an athlete I did not have the same support or understanding as the other male athletes in my school. I would like to change how young women see sports and physical fitness in general. Growing up and only seeing male representation as teachers, coaches, and even in professional sports makes me want to change how young female athletes see Physical Education. I plan on doing this by supporting their interest in sports and answering questions that could be hard to ask a Male teacher or Coach.

Another way I plan on bringing change to my field is being more inclusive. If you enter pretty much any gym class, you will see the students who really enjoys gym participating and going as hard as they can. But the student who do not even want to be there, barely participating, or not participation at all. I plan on changing this by having more inclusive units that do not require as much skill as something like basketball or volleyball. Also, learning the interest of students who do not typically enjoy traditional sports. This is important because physical fitness is a lifelong skill that many people leaving school do not retain. This ends up hurting people further down the line.

I would like to bring change to the view of gym class overall. Many people see gym class as a free period or just games teachers make them play. I want my gym class to be able to teach student how to keep themselves healthy, even after they have left high school. This change is important to me because as an adult I have no idea how to eat healthy or even exercise regularly and if it were not for my college courses I would probably never know how.

Change in my field is a must. I want to bring more female representation for young girls like me who fell in love with sports and physical fitness, but who struggled in certain areas because there was no one like me on the court or field. Finally, the change I will bring into my field is creating a long-lasting effect on student’s health.
