Study with a Purpose by Fidel - January 2014 Scholarship Essay

Purpose is what guides us to continue to wake up every day and tackle the day. Without purpose people are not motivated to do anything. It is because of this that I believe that finding your purpose is what separates a good studier from a bad studier. Before I study I like to contemplate my desire to study in the first place. The first step is writing down the pros and the cons of studying. Some common pros are getting good grades leads to happy parents and high self-esteem in classes. Some common cons are losing out on Facebook, going out with friends and lack of overall free time. The most important thing is whether or not studying will lead to your set goal such as your dream career. Probably the most motivating factor in University for me was telling myself that with each good grade I was one step closer to becoming a Medical Student.

Once I considered the pros and cons of studying I would usually begin studying using common techniques such as Cornell notes and flash cards, but during days I could not focus I had to try more drastic approaches. One drastic approach I would take would be buying a pair of scrubs and a stethoscope then sit in the middle of the College of Medicine in my school. By doing this I would see firsthand what studying will ultimately lead to. I imaged being a Medical Student and how it was a goal worth spending long nights studying for.

I believe that there is no study method out there more effective than finding the proper motivation to study in the first place. With the right mind set, I could study for hours without end. If one cannot find a reason to study, then why study?
