A Happier Place by Fei Xia - November 2019 Scholarship Essay

During our high school career, these years are most stressful as we began to look into colleges and take major tests. As if that is not enough on a person's plate, there are students that do not respect that and like to make others miserable for their own benefit of having a moment in the spotlight. Bullies are inconsiderate, and victims feel like they do not have anywhere to turn to or are too embarrassed to reach for help. That is why when the opportunity to write an article for our district wide magazine appeared, I chose to write over bullying.
In the article, I explained what bullying truly is and how it has been misused, in the hopes that some that may have previously thought they were bullied realized they were not. I also explained why bullies may appear because it is not as simple as it sounds; it involves a lot of psychology. To give people a better understanding of the choices our district has made to prevent bullying, I also included the system each campus in our school district uses to deal with these situations and what services they offer to those victimized so that they may know they have somewhere to go for help. In the attempt to help victims a little more, I try to persuade them to take advantage of those services and to look for help rather than keeping it to themselves. I also included ideas that may help them deal with bullies better and how to shake them loose. In the end, they all tied to the main point: to stand up to bullies and help make our schools better.
Even though not every student reads the magazine, parents usually look through in search of stories will stumble on mine, and most likely read it and share it with their child. By writing this article, I have been able to positively impact not only the student body, but also the community, by spreading the word that we need to stand against bullying so we can all have a better experience in high school, thus making it a happier place.
