Break the Shell by Faheem - July 2015 Scholarship Essay
One goal that I hope to accomplish at my university before I graduate is step out of my shell. By this I mean not to just attend my university with the hope to graduate on time and eventually work after my graduation but to think outside the box. I thought to myself what shall I do to step out of my shell as a transfer student at the University of Washington? Should I perform at an open Mic, maybe join student clubs or maybe apply for a campus job? All these questions lingered with me for the first half of my year at my university. Quarter by quarter I started communicating with more students who had more of a journey at the campus to see how they maintained their education with getting involved in school events.
Soon enough I broke my shell, which led me to join a couple clubs, as well as getting a job at my university. I got the opportunity to have more connections with students, faculty and staff with all the accomplishments I earned as a student. Having earned all what was given to me, it made me more of an open person with the knowledge of how to better approach someone either at my university or out in public. The goal I attempted at first was a difficult task for me to achieve but with time and the friends I made my goals were all completed.
Something I learned throughout my student life was to not burden myself with too much responsibility and to give myself free time to learn more. Attending this university, I had no idea that I would become such close friends with the students here, as well as the co-workers I worked with at the school. I highly recommend all freshmen or transfer students to be connected to their campus as a whole, whether it’s through employment, volunteering or even though participation in the campus events.
