Are leadership skills necessary for college success? Why or why not? by Faham - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Faham Adisa

Among the many of the traits needed to succeed in college, a demonstration of leadership skills is one of the most important characteristics one can have. Colleges want students who are free of temptations and could bring positive influence to other students on campus. This is why I believe that one must have strong and beneficial leadership skills when enrolling in college as they are crucial in guaranteeing one’s success.

There is an array of reasons why college students need to possess leadership skills, but most importantly, one needs to be able to make their own decisions without the influence of peers or the negativity that may be embedded in the culture of campus. Begin an independent thinker and leader is a useful skill needed for college success because people would try to persuade one another to make a decision. However, a wrong decision may lead to an unsuccessful college experience. Thus, having leadership skills encourages one to rely on their abilities and on themselves; hence, it fosters independence.

Having great leadership skills keeps one focused on their goal as well as inspires others in achieving theirs. Based on recent news stories, college students more often lose focus and indulge themselves other activities such as drinking, partying, gambling, unprotected sex, etc. Yet, these types of actions would undermine one’s goals and cause deviation from their initial and utmost resolution, college success.

Most importantly, being an efficient leader, one can also inspire others and guide them by exemplary actions and spreading their positive influence. Being a leader is not about knowing best, but it is also about sharing the gift of leadership skills with others. Peers will trust positive successful leadership skills and rely on a good leader for guidance and help. Sharing knowledge would help create a path for others who need inspiration.

Teachers, friends and family have shared with me that colleges don’t need just smart students. Colleges look for students who have great leadership skills to make a difference in their college campus, serve as inspiration to others and ultimately contribute to the society. The society needs leaders who would set an example for others who are in need. Above all, a great leader would always know how to avoid pressure, build trust, and mentor others in order to accomplish their college and life goals.
