Education is Essential by Eva - March 2017 Scholarship Essay

What better topic is there to speak on to a school-wide audience than education? Education is defined as “the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a school or university.” However to me, it is so much more than that. To me education is experience, it is learning – genuinely learning. Education is something that over the years, I have grown fond of.
As a kid, school started out exciting; I could not wait for my time to come where I became a student. The first day of kindergarten was a milestone I will never forget. I, along with my peers, viewed it as fun and entertaining. As the years go on and it becomes more difficult, we tend to view school as a chore, rather than a privilege. The work load is more, and we are exhausted from classes and extracurricular activities on top of that. Albeit, I wish school had a more positive outlook on it, considering that is where students receive a lot of their education. It is sad to see students dreading school when someone in another country wishes more than anything to have that same right. Not only is education important to each individual who is receiving it, but it has large scale benefits as well. With education, the economy grows (people work better and schooling increases GDP), it reduces inequalities such as gender and income, and it creates sustainable communities while promoting good physical and mental health. The list goes on, but I hope this glimpse into the importance of education has some persuasion.
Speaking to an audience of students is the perfect way to try and help them realize that what we, as students, are doing now, can affect the whole future of this country. We ARE the future. Our whole attitude is a huge factor in this as well. If we see school and learning as a burden, chances are we will not receive any benefit from it. The whole reason we spend countless hours at school, and then even more studying, is to better ourselves and our future. Learning can be fun if you make it fun, and that goes for just about anything, so don’t make it out to be such a bad thing. A positive attitude is vital to enjoying what you do and doing it wholeheartedly. Just look at the bright side of things and take advantage of these resources you are given. If you are spending all of that time to school related activities, why not give it your all?
Education is something that holds a lot of significance to me, which is why I work hard to keep my grades up. Although, I do not do well in school for the purpose of having a great academic record, I do it to learn the material and gain new understandings of various topics. Education is one of the most considerable things we have to change the world we live in, and that is something I want all students to grasp. As a speaker to a school-wide audience, I would make it my task to help every student understand how paramount their education is, as well as how to truly appreciate it, so that they may use it for the good of their futures.
