Sadie Hawkins dance by Estefania - November 2019 Scholarship Essay
Though Sadies Hawkins dances were intended for girls to ask guys, my experience was a little different.
At my school, the Sadies Hawkins Dance had not occurred in over ten years, but my leadership teacher was determined that I would be one to support my leadership class put it together.
From the get go, I was not very involved in school. I played a few sports and only really knew of the people in my classes, so it was a gutsy thought to imagine the task of getting people to actually come.
Dances are not as simple as decorations and food; it is about getting an entire community to pitch in. I had to help pick a location, one that was both safe and enjoyable for dancing; find the right theme that appealed to teens my age, whether it be simple or extravagant; advertise, both verbal and visual, in order to promote the dance; use manual labor to set-up and clean-up the beautiful sets and scenes; and lastly, most importantly, choose the music that will captivate students to dance in an appropriate nature.
I may not have taken part in all of these tasks, but I learned that this dance could not have been successful without them. More than 200 students came to the event, which for the sudden nature of the dance actually surpassed the activities director’s expectations.
With a populated dance, the school’s spirit became more of the culture and demonstrated to the students that participating in school events can be enjoyable. Putting on this empowering dance gave me another significant meaning. I was able to see students make brave decisions to pursue those they cared for. Being in the leadership class, I was able to direct the true meaning behind Sadies Hawkins; the dance would no longer be about girls asking guys, but any person asking any person. With the world evolving around me, creating an inclusive campus culture is essential, and I believe this actually happened because of this dance as it united the school and ideals of the campus.
