The Drive to Succeed by Eryn - September 2014 Scholarship Essay

A skill that is absolutely necessary for success in college is personal motivation. As an incoming freshman, I have learned the hard way that students are ultimately responsible for themselves in almost every aspect. Unlike in high school, professors are not concerned about their individual students’ success. No one is going to ask whether or not you have done your homework, make sure that you have not overslept for class, or wonder if you are struggling with your course load. That is not to say a professor would turn away a student seeking assistance, but the student must first have the drive to ask for help when he needs it.

There are infinitely many distractions that college students must avoid in order to complete their assigned tasks properly and on time. From sporting events to social get-togethers, a student must be disciplined enough to know when it is time to study and when they can allow for some personal time. It is far too easy to get caught up in the fun of college life and lose sight of the ultimate goal: to earn a college degree. If one fails to stay motivated, both time and money will be wasted in the end.

There is a never-ending list of important skills one must possess in order to be a successful college student. While all the skills on this list are vital, the drive to succeed is number one. A motivated person will be able to avoid distractions and complete all the tasks necessary to do well. This motivation directly correlates with good grades, proper sleep habits, and an overall positive college experience.
