How Katniss Everdeen from Hunger Games influenced me by Erica - April 2014 Scholarship Essay

Katniss Everdeen is one of the bravest book character's I've ever seen. For one, she volunteered for her sister as Tribute for something that could have very well killed her. I honestly don't think I could ever do that for anyone, even if I loved them with all of my heart. For two, after she heard from the announcer during the Hunger Games that two people could win, as long as they were from the same district, she did everything in her power to keep Peeta safe and healthy. She risked her life again, this time for Peeta, whom she barely knew, by going out to the cornucopia and getting the bag from her district that had cream that Peeta needed to heal. She knew that it was a death trap because as soon as someone saw her they would go after her to stop her. In the end she managed to save her sister, her new friend Peeta and received a lot of money and a house in the victors village for her family and food once a month for her district, which struggled to get by before.

Katniss influenced me with her bravery. I know at the time she may have just thought she was saving her sister, but in the long run her bravery led to her making a huge difference for her family and district. Her character made me want to be braver for my family and friends and to want to make a difference. After I graduate high school, I plan to be a nurse. That will help make a difference in people’s lives every day, but I want to do something so much bigger. I know that I could never put my life in danger to save someone else like Katniss did twice, so I would have to make a difference some other way.

When I was a sophomore in High School, my father passed away from something called esophageal varices because he was an alcoholic. Losing him was the hardest thing I have ever been through at this point in my life and I know counseling helped, but I think I needed someone who could relate to me to help me cope completely. That’s why I want to use my experience with losing my dad to teach children and teenagers how to cope with losing a parent at such a young age and to talk about what alcohol can do. Reliving my dad’s death and the emotions that came with it will take a lot of bravery, but it is something I am will to do to make a difference in young people’s lives.
Thank you for your consideration.
