Education as a Weapon by Emmy - January 2021 Scholarship Essay
“Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world” (Nelson Mandela). Education is a right because everyone deserves access to education but it is up to the student to work hard and do well with their education. Everyone deserves access to education because that is how society makes progress as a whole, students will have a better standard of living therefore raising the standard of living, and it encourages students to be more productive people in society.
In the last century, society has made great progress in areas such as medicine and technology and that is loosely related to the education system. Schools started as a one room schoolhouse in the 1840’s and when the education system changed to a more modern school with more rooms and teachers, the societal progress started to snowball, from colored TVs to the internet to new medicine. That is because education became more important and desired. Nowadays students are not thrilled by education as they used to be and as a result society has almost lulled. Society has made small improvements but nothing compared to colored TVs and the internet. Once education is distributed more equally throughout the country, society will be driven forward.
Students who receive a standard education tend to have a higher chance of being above the poverty line than kids who do not receive any type of formal education. Meaning that if education was evenly distributed more kids would be above the poverty line. Therefore raising the poverty line or raising the standard of living. If the standard of living is raised then society as a whole would be bettered.
Students are more productive if taught how to be productive and encouraged to do so. When they grow up, they will be more productive adults and that will make society better because then more things will be accomplished.
Kids are the future of society and if they are not educated then society will lose progress. Now if more kids were educated society would be pushed to make more progress. The direction is forward and the only way to go that way is educating the ones who will soon be leading society in that direction.
