Sustaining Students and Staff by EmmaRae - November 2019 Scholarship Essay

Butte High School: a tiny school containing around one hundred students, possibly less. Each student is individually known by the staff and other students, but it can still be difficult to distinguish myself from my peers.
In order to stand out and make a difference, I have dedicated time and effort to make my school and community a better place. Small achievements can lead to substantial results and an improved learning environment. I believe I have impacted my high school by sustaining the students, teachers, and other staff in the building.
Tutoring or advising other students for assignments is one of the many attempts I make to improve the school. By enhancing the knowledge of a few members of the school population, a difference is made in the overall grades and success. Talking to shy kids or those who seem down is another point where anybody can make a difference. I used to be extremely timid around other students. With the compassion and support of a few upperclassmen, I was able to come out of my shell and become the person I am. I hope at some point I can do the same for another student.
Assisting the teachers is simple. Being respectful, completing work on time, and striving to do my best are all actions that may seem insignificant. It is important to remember that teachers are people, too! They will have days when they feel blue or are tired. Sometimes, students can be frustrating, so providing encouragement can let them know that their attempts to teach are not in vain. Kindness and cooperation can be influential for how the rest of their day goes.
The other staff, such as the janitors and lunch ladies, can be impacted by the student population. Most of the people in these positions love their students and care about their wellbeing. I find it critical to appreciate them for everything they do. The simple action of picking up a piece of garbage or stopping and having a conversation seems to make a difference.
Treating the rest of the school population with respect is one of the best ways to leave a positive impact on this little community. Any organization, company, or educational system is only as good as the people who are a part of it. In the case of my school, every student or staff members makes a substantial contribution to the environment. I strive to create a positive impact on my school, because people will not remember grades or test scores, they will remember how they were treated!
