Minimal, but Maximal Minds by Emma - July 2020 Scholarship Essay
Our brains, a marvelous wonder, most do not even understand the basic complexities that it actually entails. That though, is neither here nor there. Our minds get distracted easy and quickly. Most people that claim they can actually multitask, without realizing indirectly makes one with less effort over the other. Just based on distractions alone our quality of work is not directly associated with what we can actually do. Whether it be colors, songs, or lights. Everything that is not the agenda is ultimately distracting.
The ideal and most likely effective learning environment for a classroom would be a minimalist approach, even starting at kindergarten. Our developmental activities can be fun and creative but the atmosphere should remain on point and not add to the increase of regular distractions. This classroom would be gray scale and overall very clean. Especially with all the icky germs schools have this would be very easy to clean with this minimalist approach. The Chairs would be evenly spaced, to minimize distractions from peers. As well as clean counters for work. Everything would maintain the same very minimal decor and maximum learning environment.
The world map would be gleaming on one of the walls, as it is very important for students to have a sense of the world. For me personally, this clean and very minimum decor atmosphere is the best to captivate and engage minds within the necessary material. It maximizes space for more educational usages. Whether that be book shelves of favored class books, or project displays. My ideal classroom maximizes brain power with the limit of distractions at hand. That way the students, including myself, can focus on the most important task that a student can have- their education. Limiting distractions of decor produces better test scores and overall a higher engagement in the curriculum. Although this is a rather boring approach, the modern classroom is leaning towards more and more on point usages of classrooms space.
