Accountability Within The Classroom by Emma - January 2020 Scholarship Essay

Even though some people may believe that technology can make students lazy within the classroom, it really allows them to open their minds to a whole new world of information. Students are now able to learn so many new things that they had never had the opportunity to because of the growth of technology use in the classroom. The highschool I previously went to began pushing the use of computers during the last two years I went there. They had wanted us to have every possible resource available to us to enhance our capacity for learning and our teacher's methods of teaching. While not all of my teachers had taken to the idea of implementing technology in the classroom, they all vocalized that they understood how it can make learning easier for a student. One teacher, in particular, made an effort to completely adjust her teaching so that it was focused on solely using online worksheets and homework assignments. She had believed that it not only made it easier for students to keep track of their assignments but also allowed her to largely decrease the amount of paper that was wasted in a school year. I greatly appreciated this teacher because she gave me the motivation that I needed to push myself to work harder within my classes to become a more responsible student. Giving students the opportunity to never have to search through their folders for an assignment greatly increases their accountability in the classroom. It forces students to admit that their inability to do a homework assignment is solely their fault rather than the fault of external factors. If more high schools choose to shift to a more technologically centered environment, it will cause students to adapt to being more accountable in their daily life. If this behavior is made into a habit it would be something they could take with them into their college years to hopefully improve the amount of effort they put toward receiving their degree. By increasing how accountable I was in my high school classroom my teacher gave me the confidence I needed to improve my work ethic enough that I became even more confident in my abilities. While I was in her class I saw this kind of improvement in almost every student that she taught. Not only was she helping me improve my behavior in the classroom but she allowed me to be in a setting where everyone cared about and put effort into their daily assignments. Now that I have learned what that kind of environment feels like I hope to continue that behavior so that it can spread throughout other classrooms and workplaces. If everyone were to take on that behavior it would allow everyone to be more proactive when doing their daily work.
