The Things Life Teaches You by Emma - June 2017 Scholarship Essay
I have learned to never assume something is the way that I think it is, and that has come from my personal experience. From the time that I was in kindergarten through the time I was in about sixth grade, I thought that what I wanted to do in life was be a teacher, particularly an elementary school one. I could imagine my adult life only one way, as most kids do at that age, and refused to accept the fact that I could change my mind about what I wanted to be, no matter what people with more wisdom told me about changing with age. I was very naive, but things changed, as they always do.
One day, when I was in the middle of junior high school, I decided that I wanted to go to school to become a Spanish teacher. I don't speak the language naturally, but I was in Spanish class with my teacher who spoke English as her native language, and thought to myself "I am going to be a Spanish teacher one day." I was very proud of myself, as I thought it an unusual career aspiration, and knew that I had chosen the right job for myself.
Well, fast-forward about two years. I watched the 2014 Academy Awards ceremony and from that moment on I wanted to be involved with theater and film and hoped that one day, I too, could be the recipient of one of the beloved statues marking a major accomplishment in the acting industry. I enrolled in high school theater classes, took choir, and participated in anything that I could along those lines to better my chances of becoming a successful actress.
Now, all of my former aspirations seem to have left me. While I still have a tremendous appreciation for the performing arts, the Spanish language, and the foundation that Elementary School provides everyone, I think that I have found the right match for myself. Due to the 2016 election, I have been inspired to become involved in politics. I want to graduate from high school, go on to college, and then become a lawyer. I have contemplated running for office if the right opportunity is provided to me.
