Possibilities by Emily - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

The phrase, “When am I ever going to need this in real life,” recited by all high schoolers comes to mind when thinking of education. And the truth is that the average person doesn’t need to find the antiderivative of an equation or recite lines from Hamlet. But who wants to be average anyway? It was during my education in which I found the source of my passion and the subject I would like to incorporate into the rest of my life. Had it not been for my education I would have a completely different future in mind, and I know it wouldn’t be nearly this bright. So, I guess what I am saying is that an education gives a student a chance to be extraordinary.

Education opens doors and provides young people with resources to plan an amazing future. School is composed of the core subjects: English, Math, Science, and History. But there is so much more: Language, Business, Health, Physical fitness, etc. While these are not the only options for a student seeking a future, the chances are that the basics fall under one of these categories. If you love the world and want to experience different cultures, like me, you’ll discover this in a language class or in global history. If you want to help all animals and become a zoologist, you’ll find your start in biology. Or if you are so courageous and you decide that you want to be the President, you’ll learn about politics in your government class. Every profession has roots in these core classes, so if you take the time now to explore them and enjoy them, your future will be mapped out in no time.

Going to school also provides you with endless resources. Can you imagine how many books are sitting in your school right now? Take advantage! Use the websites your teacher gives you and the dusty textbook you disregarded because you never know where they may lead you. Also, all of the after school activities that you think you are too good for could be very worthwhile. Once you have found the subject that could potentially be the start to your future (because I know you will!), see if there is a club that is somehow related to that area. If there is join, and if there isn’t think about starting a club.

I know that I am asking a lot, but the benefits of schooling and education outweigh the downfalls. I guarantee that with some help and guidance you will see the worth in education. Don’t look at school as a temporary thing that ends in 13 years, look at it as the start to the rest of your life. Education offers you possibilities for you future, you just have to recognize and embrace them!
