The Top Book of 2020 by Emily - October 2020 Scholarship Essay

The start of the year 2020 has certainly been interesting. It seems like with every new month a cluster of new obstacles have been around the corner ready to jump at us. However, quarentein also gave a lot of people an abnormal amount of free time, and most people took advantage of that. Whether it be picking up a new hobby like sewing or embroidery, or improving themselves. However, during my quarantine, I did a lot of reading.
Reading isn’t exclusively limited to a stack of papers binded at the spine and composed of over 80,000 words. Now, more mature writers have the ability to write books and stories and share them with others who are interested in the genre. However, their is a simple pleasure that comes from sitting down with a physical book and reading it cover to cover under a fuzzy blanket.
During my time in quarantine I read many books, mostly dabbling in science fictions and dystopian fantasies of heroes and rebels. The one book I came across was different though. It had a more modern setting and characters that the reader could easily relate to and connect to people in their own lives.
The name of the book was Need. It was a story about a small high school in the middle of nowhere. It had all of the usual social clicks and sports teams, the only thing that was different was the internet presents that seemed to infect the whole school. One by one students found themselves wrapped up in a website that would give them anything if they accomplished small and seeming impactful tasks. It was harmless fun, until it wasn’t. The greed soon overtook some of the teenagers and the tasks became more and more dangerous and destructive, one student going so far as to kill another. Eventually the two teens who were investigating the origin of the website stumble across the man who made it, and put an end to it.
