A Time I Failed and Learned From It by Emily - February 2017 Scholarship Essay
As human beings, we all share similarities and differences. A common similarity that is shared amongst everyone is everyone’s thoughts on certain topics. It is obvious that not everyone will develop the same outlook, but that does not mean that there is not a topic in which everyone does agree. Although everyone thinks differently, we all agree that it only takes one attempt at doing something to learn from it. For instance, I failed a test in elementary school because I did not study for it.
Because I usually made good grades, I never worried about studying for or retaking tests. After receiving my graded test and seeing that I had earned a sixty percent on it, I was scared. I panicked about what my mother was going to say about my grade, especially because a parental signature was required. I knew that this was not something that I could hide from her forever. Later on that evening, I took the paper out of my bag and went to ask my mother to sign it.
As I was expecting, she was disappointed in my grade but was not as angry as I was expecting. After signing the test, she made it clear that I was to study hard and to do better on the retake. Being a former straight A student, she gave me ideas on how to study. When I mentioned to her that the retake was matching, she suggested using index cards to make flashcards. After dinner, I spent the rest of the evening making flashcards, and studied for the next several days.
On the day of the retake, I felt confident. When my teacher passed out our tests, I finished it within a short period of time and with ease. The only hard part was playing the waiting game. About twenty minutes later, my teacher finally finished grading and began passing out the tests. The moment I saw my grade, I was amazed; my grade rose from a sixty percent to a one hundred percent.
From that moment on, I took studying more seriously. Although some classes are my weakness, I still do my best to push myself to maintain a passing grade and a good grade point average; doing so has definitely paid off. Thanks to studying and being studious, I’ve been accepted into six universities, three in which I’m highly interested in attending. Even though I push myself now, I will most definitely be pushing myself even harder in college. Living a stable life requires good income, which requires a college degree, a degree in which I will push myself to pursue.
