The Purpose of Education by Elliot - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

Education is a critical part of every culture and civilization since the dawn of man. With education being so embedded in today’s society, many people either take it for granted or let it pass them by. However the burden of people who pass up education is not only on themselves, but on the rest of the community and mankind. The purpose of education is betterment of the mind and for the benefit of the community.

When focusing on the bare essentials of education, the main aspect is the concept of knowledge. With education comes supplemental knowledge which is beneficial to an individual. This knowledge that is obtained leads to efficient critical thinking abilities and helps an individual to process complex problems and dilemmas. Without education, people would not have higher thinking abilities and would only know what they have experienced personally; they would not be cultured in any way.

The education and understanding of different cultures is critical in today’s society. Receiving an education about other cultures promotes acceptance of other people and discourages close-mindedness. Not only would an increase of knowledge with education benefit an individual, it would be doing a service to the entire community.

In any type of community, local or global, an individual receiving an education helps move the entire community in the right direction. With an education, a person has the opportunity to improve upon society’s current misgivings such as improper philosophical ideals or sub-par technology. With an education, the sky is the limit.

In closing, education is essential to society on a global scale. What people achieve in this lifetime will be passed down to the next generation. As this cycle continues, individuals and communities will grow stronger and uncover some of life’s greatest mysteries. The purpose of education, above all, is for the betterment of mankind.
