Seizing the Day: Gap Year by Elliandra - August 2019 Scholarship Essay

I feel that many people view gap years as lazy or, overall, not a good idea. I, however, believe that it can be beneficial, maybe even crucial for some.

How would I make the most of a gap year? Well, first, I would look at what my goals are. I would evaluate what needs to be done in order to achieve those goals. This first step is vital. For example, if I want to go to college, what do I need in order to get there? Asking yourself these questions and making a plan is important. It will keep you organized, on track, and remind you of what's important and what you're trying to do.

Next, you need to put that planning into action. You can plan all you want but, without that first step, you won't get anywhere. If you need money, get a job. If you need even more financial help, apply for scholarships and talk to a financial adviser. If you want to gain some experience, try to get an internship or take a general education class at a local community college. Experiences like this would be helpful.

Lastly, I want to address the more personal side of this. Many go into college right after high school not knowing what they want to do and waste years and money because they are indecisive. Plus, a lot of people aren't ready emotionally or mentally for college. They need to take time to mature and figure out what they're going to do without all the pressure that is put on upperclassmen high schoolers. It's something to think about.

Gap years aren't for everyone but, neither is jumping right into college. Taking even a little bit of time to really consider your options is both beneficial and healthy. Your life is on the line. I would think that is enough to have you make the best decision for yourself and your future.
