Accidental Discoveries by Elizabeth - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

There is an overwhelming amount of advice for upcoming high school freshman but the kind I would give anyone blindly entering their new home for the next four years is to get involved in what they’re curious about. Find your happiness in the hobbies, clubs, and sports your school offers. Don’t push something you might have the slightest chance of enjoying off, because frankly there’s not time to push things aside. The four years it takes to graduate high school arrives incredibly surreptitiously.

Looking back at your freshman year I bet you would never have guessed what you got out of the experiences you took a stab at. Some of the best things that have ever been destined for you could be the result of a little drive outside your comfort zone. Your best friend for the next three years could be the members of the 4/1 relay when you tried out for track the first time. The prom committee you volunteered for could be the reason you found your niche for interior design. The incredible public speaking skills you acquired through presentations on the speech and debate team, could nail you your interview for your top college choice. You find something that prompts you to get out of bed in the morning, something that your can write essays about because you’ve become so inspired by your involvement, that it is now a part of you.

Besides keeping to the right side of the hallway and keeping your GPA up, getting involved your school community is going to make your high school years, and most likely you’ll be rewarded with many accidental discoveries. Finding yourself will come naturally. By senior year you will be nowhere near close to completely figuring yourself out, but you will have a start and a lot of memorable experiences.
