Prepare for the Future by Elise - November 2021 Scholarship Essay

It is the first day of school my sophomore year, I walk into my keyboarding class dreading it. As soon as I walk in I am hit with a, "hello I am so excited to be teaching you all this semester," from my new teacher. She seems nice, which made me relieved. I make my way to my seat, the room is filled with rows on rows of computers. My teacher then goes on to tell us about how much we will learn and improve in just one semester. I felt that I really needed to improve as much as possible because I could barely type a sentence without looking down at my keyboard.
We spent every day using online lessons and games to improve our typing skills. I instantly started to learn where all the keys were located on the keyboard and then was able to increase my typing speed. It became a contest between my new friends and me on who can type the most correct words in the least amount of time. Every day I would wake up excited to go to school just for this class because it was the most fun and I had seen so much improvement in such a small amount of time, it was only up from there.
When Covid made an appearance for the first time in March of 2020, we got switched to online only to avoid having contact with others. It was a major adjustment to most of us, having to get used to waking up in the morning and logging into our virtual class instead of driving to school and learning how to submit everything online instead of just turning it into a basket in the middle of the classroom. We also could no longer write papers, we had to type them, just like almost everything else we had to do for our new virtual classes. I was always told by my mother to take keyboarding because it will help in the long run but never understood what that meant until now. I could now complete my work in half the time of my friends who had not taken that class.
My friend said to me, "how do you type so fast without even looking at your keyboard?" I told her how I took keyboarding and she explained to me how she wished she had taken that class and how it would have helped her now that we have to type every assignment for our courses, we had no idea that Covid was upon us, but this class had helped me prepare for it without even knowing.
