The value Of Special Education by Elias - November 2020 Scholarship Essay
When looking at education there are many aspects to be thankful for but I believe that the aspect of education I am most thankful for is the fact that education is done by people especially those in special education. During my time in elementary and middle school I was placed on an I.E.P. or individual education program due to my dyslexia and bellow level reading and writing skills. Because I was in a special program I was sent to separate classes where a special educations teacher would assist me in practicing my reading and writing comprehension. While I was in the special education classes I didn’t feel ashamed about by problems and the teachers were always the kindest people I had met. I was thankful for the special education teachers and their heart towards others as I slowly got up to grade level.
I had my first special education teacher when I was around eleven during middle school. I would spend a portion of my recess going over short stories and writing puzzles with the teacher as she guided me through the material. Even though I found the reading and writing difficult thanks to my teacher I found enjoyment in my time learning with her as she would make my practices into a kind of game. I was not the only person that my teacher had to assist with and in many cases I would be working with multiple students, each at their own grade level and skill. I remember that many of the kids would have emotional outbursts that would last for several minutes but even after everything that had happened she would still have a smile on her face and would still speak gently as she continued to guide the other students. The next special education teacher I had was during the first year of high school. Thanks to all the practicing my teacher gave me I was able to no longer do separate classes as I had gotten up to level for my reading and writing. Despite no taking any special classes I still was on a IEP for my regular classes and had to meet with the teacher for special education to get assistance with my classes and change my IEP.
During my next year of high school I was able to drop my IEP and take accelerated courses including college level classes. My special education teacher had a small party to celebrate the event, I felt incredible proud and thankful for all the help had received. Now I had graduated high school with a total of 58 college credits and have been accepted into the college of my choice; I am still very thankful for the special education teachers that didn’t give up on me and pushed me to do better.
