No Screams= No Problems by Elba - January 2015 Scholarship Essay
If I could give a teacher one piece of advice to help me learn, it would be that screaming does not get you respect or understanding from your students. I have been educated by a fair amount of hot-headed and impatient instructors and not one of them has contributed to the development of the devoted and hard-working student I am today.
It is understandable that teaching is an extremely difficult job. Not only must one teach a whole classroom how to do something, but one must also make sure that this valuable information is retained and not just thrown away afterwards. However, the difficulty of a task is no excuse to unacceptable behavior. Just because a student does not comprehend the material it does not mean that they are mentally challenged or purposefully trying to make you repeat yourself again. Students are taking your class and expect you, their teacher, to be patient and thorough with them about the subject they are having difficulties with. A teacher must be seen as someone students can trust as the source of knowledge they will need in their future careers.
When the teacher starts growing impatient and reacts in a negative way towards students like using the means of shouting and insulting, the students are not only not learning the material, but their desire to want to learn the material is diminishing as well. Soon afterwards, students will stop paying attention in class because whether they know it or not, they will not respect and listen to someone who does not respect and listen to them. It is true that the teacher is someone needed by the students but most often, it is forgotten that without devoted students there is no one left to teach.
It is quite simple, students and teachers need to cooperate with each other in order to prevail. Students must do their part by respecting their instructor, paying attention, and studying. Teachers must keep in mind that as human beings, students are no different from them and therefore should not be looked down upon only because they do not comprehend something the first time. No one in this world is perfect but if teachers are patient, respectful, and constantly motivate their students to learn, both parties can benefit from each other and grow towards an immaculate education system.
