Unique, Caring and Loving: Maria by Edwin - September 2013 Scholarship Essay

Thanks to a woman called Maria, I am who I am now. Maria has taught me everything I know. She has taught me values; she has shown me her love, and patience. She has always been there when I needed someone to talk to and has provided me with the support I have needed. She has always encouraged me when I felt weak, giving me advice when I did not know what to do and constantly reminding me to follow my dreams. She has always played the role of a friend, a sister, and everything else. She is the person I love and respect the most.
I remembered my first day in kindergarten. I did not want to go to school because I was afraid of how it was. When we were on our way to school I remember that she told me, “This is your first step, do not be afraid everything is going to be ok.” When I heard those words I felt a little bit more confident. Finally we shortly arrived to school. At first I was happy because I saw a lot kids, but later on I felt uncomfortable, and I began to cry. Suddenly, I saw a full figured woman with black long hair, big black radiant eyes; she was waving at me through the window. When I saw her I felt better and more relaxed, as if I was not alone.
When I began my teenage years, Maria would give me advice about what life was going to be like. I remember that she would speak in the sweetest tone, and the kindness she showed me made feel confident and secure to talk to her. When I had some problems she was wise enough to figure it out, and knew that I was going through something difficult. We used to go shopping together, our day included a lunch together and the most open conversations. On our way back home she always joked around with me but would also talks about my future, education and even girls.
Her loyalty and unconditional love is something that I admire most about her. To some people she may sometimes be someone who gets angry easily, anxious, and pushy. However to me she is the opposite, she is patient and understanding person that she knows how to help me in any time. Many of my friends used to tell me that she was a really cool person because she knew how to cook, told jokes, and the way we greeted each other. They looked the playful and loving relationship we had. She was admired by many people one of her friends told me, “Maria is a great woman, strong, and lovely person. She never gives up easily and has a really good heart. She is always willing to help those in need.” Those words made me feel really proud of her.
Now even though we live far away I feel her support, caring, and love. With a simple phone call her words can transform the worst day into the best. Two days ago, I felt bad, alone, and discouraged. Suddenly, I received a phone call and it was her. She heard me talk and she asked me, “Are you ok?” I did not even say anything about how I felt and she already knew there was something bothering me. I began to tell her what was going on. I heard her sweet and firm voice giving me advice, telling me that I am the best person in the world and she repeated her favorite phrase to me, “Everything is possible you just have to put in all your efforts to succeed.” Her words made me feel like if I was next to her and as if I had never been separated from her.
This woman knows me more than I know myself. Maria was the one who gave birth to me and raised me. She is my adorable mother who has been there for me since my childhood, my adolescence and will continue to be an important part in my future. She has been beside me in the most happy and saddest moments, even in the distance she continues to be there for me. I love her so much and I am really thankful with God that he gave me this amazing woman as my mother. She has sacrifice so much for my brother and I. Her optimism, encouragement and passion has helped me become the great person I am. Even though she does not have a career, she has faith that I will have a great and fulfilling career. The confidence she gives in me are what make me follow my dreams and become a man that she can feel proud of.
