The Purpose of Education by Dustin - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

Education is very important in today’s society. Well education has always been important. Education has many purposes. Some of the purposes of education in a society is to increase the knowledge of the general population. If the general population gets smarter, then it is more likely that the society will advance as a whole and promote innovation and inventions. If the “common sense” of a population gets higher and higher, then the people will get even smarter. Education also keeps the people from repeating history. If people don’t know what has been done, such as a discovery has been made, then people may spend much of their time and effort trying to make that same discovery.

One of the biggest purposes for education is to get people ready for their life. We start off in pre-middle school where we learn the basics for life. Simple math, the alphabet, how to read and write. Things that will be needed in everyday life. In middle school and part of high-school we learn more advanced things. Learning advanced math, about sciences and more history of not only our country, but of the world. This and the rest of high school may help students find their interests in life. Things they like to do, things they are interested in learning, and maybe what they want to do when they graduate. By the time these students graduate, many know a general field that they want to pursue. This leads into the next level on education. Either the student pursues that field and tries to get a job in it where they will learn from their superiors how to do it best, or they move onto a higher education institution where they will learn for several more years, even more general knowledge and specifically on the jobs they want. After College people are then ready to pursue their career in an effective manner.

Schools will evolve and raise the standards of education. As we discover more and more things and more major events happen, the children will be expected to learn this and thus the amount of general knowledge a student receives will increase. With this the population will hopefully increase in intelligence as well! Thus the goal of education is complete, to improve the intelligence of a population and to get every person ready to carry out their lives and careers effectively and efficiently.
