Overcoming by Dontavious - December 2019 Scholarship Essay

All throughout my high school career I was not the student who would stay at school for extra help because I wanted to be independent; I was a know it all, and most of all I had pride, the qualities of any young man maturing into adulthood. I was a student who took multiple honors and AP classes in my high school career. In the spring of my junior year, I decided to make a sound decision to continue to challenge myself in my senior year. I choose to further push myself by continuing to take AP classes.
In the first few months into my last year of high school, I noticed that I had begun to struggle in one of my advanced placement classes, the subject, math. That was my favorite and came the easiest to me, while it did the complete opposite for some of my peers. I was not able to spend minimum time on my lessons and still understand the concept fully like in previous years with my other accelerated classes where I excelled profoundly. I then realized that the exceptional student would swallow their pride and do whatever it takes to succeed in all their endeavors no matter how much pride they thought they had. So, one day I came to my senses and I made the mature, adult decision, and I began to come to tutoring for my BC Calculus class.
By doing so my grade in the class begin to come back to a place I know I can be proud of. As a result of the experience, I grew on a personal level having a changed perspective now that the people who seek help are not weak, but wise to make choices that will help them better themselves as individuals. This was a life lesson that will always stick with me as a reminder that I can do all things if I recognize what it takes to overcome any challenge placed before me. Something I didn’t think like before this. Not many people have been able to accomplish such a monumental step and it has resulted in negative outcomes because, they didn’t do anything to help themselves. However, I am grateful that I didn’t fall into that category. Now having a changed mind on how to overcome the issues I go through I feel better equipped to handle any and everything I may encounter later in my life knowing that if I seek help, I shouldn’t consider myself weak, but a wise individual who knows what it takes to better themselves.
