Twenty-two Years Brainstorming by Donovan - June 2014 Scholarship Essay
In first grade, whenever anyone would ask what kids wanted to be when they grew up some typical answers were: astronaut, fireman, doctor. But I always said author. I had always had a certain knack for writing fiction(at least in my own mind) and found it rather enjoyable from a young age. As I grew older, I decided that to follow that course completely wouldn't be my wisest option, but have always kept the childhood dream alive. I've pondered "if I were to write a book" questions for some time, but I'm slightly surprised at this opportunity to put concrete answers down on paper, so to speak.
What would it be about? As far as details go, I've considered multiple settings, characters, and other plot points. Some are more realistic, based on the old West or harsh realities of war. Others take place in the far future filled with marvelous advances in technology, and still others in different galaxies or dimensions where strange creatures and magic are commonplace. I know you're thinking that this essay is supposed to be about a book, not a slew of them, but underneath all these variables always lies a common motive, or theme. There is always a chance for someone, an average person, to do something great. Whether that chance is thrust upon him through supernatural or man-made means, or whether he chooses to take it despite long odds or obvious danger, there is always that chance for an everyday man to do incredible things.
Why? It is commonly said that art imitates life, but oftentimes I think the opposite is true. We are influenced by what surrounds us: what we see, hear, and read. Sometimes those things can be quite depressing. But I do believe that everyone is capable of doing the incredible. Every average, ordinary person has a divine potential to be great. Deep down, I think everyone feels that way too. The theme I would write about isn't new; on the contrary probably every great story has at its core something similar. And that's why they resonate with us. We can relate to them, regardless of setting and context. I guess I'd just like the chance to help people remember that. I would want to give people that hope.
I may never have my books fill shelves around the globe, or even get published, but the idea that gave a young child that dream is still with me. A young child that knew he could do great things. Not to toot my own horn, but I've done some pretty incredible stuff. My life isn't over yet, so I can still do more. And so can you. So can everyone, no matter their circumstances. That would be what I would try to capture in my writing. That would be what my book was about.
