Did I pass? by Dillon - February 2017 Scholarship Essay
“Awh, you’ll get it next time. Don’t worry about it.” We’ve all heard these words at some point in our lives. I received the pitiful treatment right after I broke the news to my mother. I told her I failed my driver’s test because I never remembered to look over my shoulder when I was required to. It’s such a simple thing, I thought to myself. But this quickly turned into one of the best lessons of my life. Nothing is as easy as you think it is.
I have failed and faced adversity many times in my life but failing a driver’s test because I wasn’t observant, that was embarrassing. I completed a perfect three-point turn and went the exact speed limit the entire exam. I even parallel parked perfectly. Even so, I still had to slump my shoulders when asked about how it went. Life is like that sometimes though. I was taught to study for tests even if you think they’re going to be easy, because you can always fail. Nothing will ever be as simple as one thinks it will be. Even if it is, failure is always unexpected. I always do my best now to take “easy” things as if they are difficult.
