Environment of College by Dillon - December 2016 Scholarship Essay

Throughout school every student faces challenges. These can be academic, social, athletic or even mental. The accomplishment I am most proud of is when I earned an A in the first college course I took. This class was Environmental Science through Thomas More College. My professor was a teacher at my high school that had earned enough credentials to teach a college course at my high school. I decided to take this course the first semester of my Junior year, which was the first opportunity I had. From the start, this class was extremely difficult.
Each week the class consisted of two lecture days and one lab. Then every few weeks we would leave campus to conduct tests and collect data at nature reserves, field station, or rivers. These interesting experiments and labs were accompanied by lab reports each week and lectures required intense class participation as well as active studying and reviewing outside of class. It became apparent from the beginning that this was not a class designed for high school students, much less a student who has never taken a college course before.
However, I stepped up to the challenge. The first test helped me gage my study habits when I earned a below average grade. I was upset with myself for not putting more effort into my studies. The next test went a little different. I received one of the highest grades in the class and was given high praises from my teacher on all my lab reports. I continued my study habits throughout the semester and did everything possible to earn every point possible on all assignments. This hard work paid off when I received a very high grade on my final research paper as well as an A on the final exam. I was ecstatic to see my countless hours of studying and writing pay off in the long run. I received my transcript from Thomas More and was extremely proud of myself for completing such a challenging course and receiving an overall grade of an A.
