Hunger by Diana - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

What is the purpose of education? That is a question people ask all the time. Generally people equate education to school, and school to jobs, and jobs to money. So through the transitive proper is the purpose of education to make dollars? Let’s analyze this argument.

First, can one only become rich and wealthy by holding the right level of schooling? Of course not, many of people make money without having completed what one might call their education. Why George Foremen, Kirk Kerkorian, and Francisco Pinault all dropped out of high school yet they all are multimillionaires. Thus it is possible to obtain wealth, and, even fame, without finishing the bare minimum schooling required.

Since one does not need vast amounts of schooling or a certain educational level to obtain wealth, then the real question is why people insist on having an education. What is the point of it all? Why do people spend thousands of dollars on universities, and colleges to achieve what they say a higher education? Why do doctors, engineers, lawyers, and professors spend years and money, possibly even ending up with thousands of dollars in debt, on education? What is the purpose? Well through asking this question one answers the question. The purpose is to understand the world around us, and only through education one can gain a better grasp of this world. When one educates themselves one can devise answers to many questions, for example like what is the purpose of education. Through questioning, testing, and analyzing we can create answers to these questions. In the end this process is what encourages people to pursue an education.

Ultimately, the purpose of education is not to obtain a prestigious career, or a large paycheck, but to explain the world around us. The reason for education is to learn new things, to discover what drive the phenomena in our world. And because of this hunger for knowledge and discovery, individuals are willing to dedicate their lives in education.
