There's More Than Meets The Eye by Destiny - October 2013 Scholarship Essay

Having the opportunity of life is a wonderful blessing from God. Being brought up into this world and living life on Earth can be an exciting, yet challenging adventure. One of the most crucial things about living your life is to expand your knowledge. Even though we are sometimes faced with obstacles throughout our lifetime, we definitely learn important life lessons along with it.

I’ve learned a lot from my educational classes, but the biggest life lessons are learned from outside of the classroom. From past experiences, the most valuable life lesson that I’ve learned is to never judge a book by its cover. As a child, I remember that there was this house for sale across the street from me. It was a big, luxurious house that was extremely expensive. It seemed like it took forever until someone bought the house, but one day this couple finally started to move into it. As they were moving in, I noticed that they had a daughter named Ashley. She was eleven years old at the time, which was the same age as me. I remember that I would always see her outside playing with all these nice things. Sometimes it would even make me a little jealous of her life. The fact that she lived in this awesome house with so many cool things made me think that she was a spoiled little brat who got everything she ever wanted. One day, her parents came over to my house to invite me to Ashley’s birthday party that afternoon. I wasn’t quite for sure if I was going to go or not because of how she might act towards me. I didn’t really want to attend her birthday party, but once I seen how much fun everyone was having, I ended up going over there. I have to admit that I was really worried about meeting her, but once I did she was nothing like I had assumed she was. She was actually super nice and so down-to-earth. She turned out to be a completely different person than what I expected. I ended up having a lot of fun at her birthday party and I was so glad that I decided to go. Ever since that day we have grown so close to each other over the years. We are even still best friends to this very day.

Life lessons have taught me a lot, but my childhood experience is by far the most valuable lesson that I’ve learned in my life. When it comes to my situation, I’ve learned to never judge someone based off of how they were brought up in life because everyone has a different lifestyle. As of today, I ultimately know that you should never judge a person based on their appearance, personality, actions, or lifestyle because there is a lot more than meets the eye.
