The Birth of a New Dream by Destiny - June 2017 Scholarship Essay
As a child you always have crazy aspirations — become an astronaut, be president, become a doctor — and those aspirations are always changing. When I was six years old, no matter how many times I was asked, I would always answer the career question the same. I want to be a veterinarian. That was my dream for so many years.
As I grew up my dream continued to grow and I attended the Health Sciences Academy in high school. I was on the veterinarian track. I was so prepared to make this my life and then we moved. I was crushed. I worked so hard to achieve my dream and suddenly it felt like it was being ripped away from me.
Once I graduated high school I was so lost. I had no idea what I wanted to do. I thought that I could never do what I originally wanted. I took some time and realized that though I may have enjoyed being a veterinarian, for the most part, I would have hated having to put an animal down. Even knowing it would be for the better, it would have killed me.
With that finally realized I figured out that what would make me happy, would be to pursue a career in journalism. I love sports, especially football. So, I decided to major in mass communication focusing on multimedia journalism to become a sideline correspondent.
That is how my life-long dream to become a veterinarian died and my dream of being a sports reporter was born. It really was a 360 on my part but looking back it really is what I'm meant to do. My love for sports outweighs my love for animals, but only slightly.
