The True Meaning of Family by David - October 2013 Scholarship Essay
In all of history, there has been one thing that man can rely on. Only one concept has been passed down from generation to generation in the minds of children and parents alike. It has been discussed by people that range from philosophers to businessmen or from comedians to scientists, and some of the most influential people of any age respect it as the cornerstone of social life. Family.
There is a popular saying about family: “Friends come and go, but family will always be there for you.” This has applied for me more than anyone. When I was 9, my immediate family of my mother, father and myself moved from the small town of Medford, Massachusetts to the big city of Houston, Texas. What a change! I left the suburban quasi-city life that I had known my entire life - friends, family and all - to explore the metropolis that is Houston. Throughout the adjustment period (to a nine year old, that was quite a long time!), only one thing stood by me - family. When I reentered the nearby elementary school in the middle of my fifth grade year, I knew no one. Going home every day to a familiar face was the only thing keeping me from getting lost in the sea of new people and places.
Even today, family is what comes first in my life. From holiday celebrations to occasional family dinners, we get together constantly. I’ve learned about business and life from my older cousins; I’ve heard stories of foreign lands from my uncle and aunt who travel constantly. Family has taught, helped, and stood by me.
