To Lead Or Not To Lead-That Is The Question by Daniel - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

As William Shakespeare once said in Hamlet, “To be or not to be, that is the question”. The question at hand in this scenario is what exactly does it mean to be a leader? This sole question is very important as we all are transitioning to college. Google defines a leader as “the person who leads or commands a group, community, or country”. As high school is drawing to a close and college is about to begin, all seniors across the state are looking for an answer to this question. In addition to just being able to be a leader, one has to make sure they possess the correct leadership skills that way they can lead themselves and others to the road to victory (graduating college).

On the issue of whether or not leadership skills are vital for one’s success in college, I think they are 100% necessary to have in order to survive college. When you first enter college as a freshman after completing high school, you don’t really know anyone. As a result of not knowing anyone, you have to quickly rise up to the occasion and put yourself out there by using your leadership skills to take control of a situation. By taking over a situation effectively, you assert yourself in a position that others would want to look up to you and be your friend.

Common leadership skills include: being a good communicator, and having quiet confidence. Possessing leadership skills such as being an effective communicator is necessary for completing college because if you don’t really know how to properly conduct yourself in a group setting, then you can never get your opinion voiced. Once you show that you are not able to communicate with others and get your opinions voiced, you start to suffer a loss. The loss that one suffers is more of a cultural loss due to the fact that they were not able to fully experience the exposure that came from communicating with other groups among our society.

As I said above, possessing leadership skills is not all about whether or not you are a good communicator although it helps, in order to successfully graduate college it is important that you exuberate in the up most amount of confidence that you have in yourself. By showing others that you have confidence, it shows others that you are in fact a dependable person and that they can count on you with any future responsibilities. This need of being a dependable person extends to when teachers and students rely on you to get a specific task accomplished.

Overall I think that it is in fact important that one possesses some amount of leadership skills if they want to be successful in college. Otherwise if you don't end up possessing any amount of leadership skills, then there is a high chance that you will not be able to graduate from college successfully.
